XPeng’s Humanoid Robot Ambition Gets a $900 Million Boost

A major funding round gives the Chinese EV maker’s robotics business a $6.3 billion valuation as it prepares to take its IRON humanoid robot into mass production

Guangzhou, China, 25 August 2026 – Xpeng is taking a major step into the rapidly developing humanoid robotics industry after its robotics business raised more than US$900 million in its first external funding round. The investment values the unit at more than US$6.3 billion and gives the company additional resources to develop artificial intelligence, robotics hardware and large-scale production.

The funding arrives as XPeng prepares to move its IRON humanoid robot from development toward mass production. The company plans to produce around 1,000 IRON robots each month by the end of 2026, with early deployments expected in retail and industrial environments. Broader commercial sales are planned for 2027.

The financing round was led by IDG Capital, with participation from Gaorong Ventures and strategic investments from technology companies including Tencent and Alibaba. According to XPeng, the deal represents the largest single private financing round in China’s embodied artificial intelligence industry so far.

The new capital will support several areas of the company’s robotics strategy. These include research and development for robot hardware and software, training physical AI models, generating high-quality data, establishing mass production facilities, and expanding into international markets.

At the center of the plan is IRON, XPeng’s humanoid robot designed to perform tasks that require human-like movement and interaction. The robot has 76 degrees of freedom across its body and 21 degrees of freedom in each hand, allowing it to perform a wide range of movements. It also uses three Turing AI chips that provide up to 2,250 trillion operations per second of effective computing power for on-device AI processing.

The company sees a close connection between its experience in electric vehicles and its robotics ambitions. Modern smart vehicles already depend on technologies such as artificial intelligence, sensors, computing systems, autonomous driving and advanced software. XPeng is now applying some of these capabilities to machines designed to operate in physical environments.

This approach reflects a wider change in the technology industry. Humanoid robots are increasingly being developed as general-purpose machines that could eventually work in factories, warehouses, stores, and other environments. Instead of designing a different machine for every individual task, companies are working toward robots that can learn and adapt to different activities using physical AI.

For XPeng, reaching mass production will be an important test. Building a working prototype is only one part of developing a commercially useful humanoid robot. Companies must also improve reliability, reduce manufacturing costs, train AI systems with large amounts of real-world data, and establish production systems capable of making robots at scale.

The size of XPeng’s latest funding round shows the growing financial interest in this area. The investment also gives its robotics business a substantial valuation before the IRON robot enters large-scale commercial production. The company is betting that advances in AI, robotics and manufacturing can create a new business opportunity alongside its established electric vehicle operations.

As the next stage of development begins, XPeng will focus on turning its robotics technology into a commercially viable product. If the company meets its production targets, IRON could become an important example of how physical AI is moving from laboratories and demonstrations into real-world workplaces. The development also highlights the growing role of humanoid robots in the future of automation, intelligent manufacturing, and AI-powered industries.
